Somatic Trauma Therapy

Last year my experience of Compassionate Enquiry really confirmed for me that talking often wasn’t enough for some clients, something is still ‘out of reach’ so I decided I would have to do some more training, so here I am halfway through (Feb 25) an in depth and intensive Somatic Trauma Therapy course.

It’s based on the work of Peter Levine who developed Somatic Experiencing and wrote Waking the Tiger and Babette Rothchild who wrote The Body Remembers, both are world leading experts and have paved the way for therapy to move from a purely talking process to one which pays as much attention, often more to what we are experiencing in our bodies.

“Traumatic symptoms are not caused by the event itself. They arise when residual energy from the experience is not discharged from the body. This energy remains trapped in the nervous system where it can wreck and havoc on your bodies and minds.”

— Peter Levine

So what is it?

Somatic therapy is an integrative approach to healing trauma that emphasizes the mind-body connection.

It draws from various therapeutic practices—physical, emotional, and psychological—to help individuals process and release trauma that may be trapped in the body.

It is a very effective way of working with the physical and emotional distress that trauma can cause It’s a way of moving towards healing and integrating our experience without the need for verbalising a story, we listen to your body instead.

In somatic therapy, the body is the starting point to achieve healing. This form of therapy helps us develop an awareness of bodily sensations and teaches people to feel safe in their bodies while exploring thoughts, emotions, and memories.

Your taught to observe and track your physical sensations and with the use of simple exercises, you learn to observe and tolerate the physical sensations that give rise to strong emotions.

You learn a lot about your nervous system, becoming curious about how our bodies function and respond can help make sense of what we are experience as we start to feel better. The beauty of this work is that it enables the client to be a part of their own recovery as they use the tools as and when they need, in order to regain stability when they are alone.
